Son of a Saint is planning to double the number of boys they serve to 200 by the end of 2021 and is reaching out for your help. Son of a Saint is not stopping in their drive to empower fatherless boys and hopes you won't either. Their mission is being amplified right now but is built on work that has always been important.
Growing up without a father is a challenge facing thousands of boys in New Orleans. For too many of them, the challenge will prove overwhelming. Son of a Saint exists for these boys, providing mentorship, education, recreation, camaraderie, cultural enrichment, emotional support, and helping to fill the void of dozens of fatherless young men in New Orleans.
Please feel free to share this information with your personal and professional network if they are interested in supporting Son of a Saint. Listed below are a number of ways to get involved, including what mentorship and volunteerism look like at Son of a Saint.
Mentor Application - Submit an application to be a mentor
Son of a Saint mentors teach, guide, provide advice and support to, watch over and foster the progress of a mentee. When a boy is mentored into a well-developed man, there are huge rewards - not just for the boy but for the adult mentor as well. You may opt to mentor a group, co-mentor, or one-on-one. Son of a Saint requires mentors that are paired individually to check in once a week with their mentee via face-to-face, text, phone call, virtually, or email. The time commitment for mentors is 8+ hours per month. Mentors that are paired individually and attend group activities are also required to fill out the SOAS Monthly Hours Google Form.
Volunteer Application - Submit an application to be a volunteer
Son of a Saint volunteers take part in a variety of capacities, including event attendants, tutors, drivers, committee members, activity facilitators, etc. Son of a Saint depends on volunteers for a number of functions critical to the operational success of the organization. Volunteering with Son of a Saint is a rewarding way to make a difference for our boys and our city. The time commitment for volunteers varies based on the event and their availability.
Mentee Application - Submit an application to be a volunteer
Son of a Saint accepts young men who have reached age 10 - 12 during the timeframe of the application cycle or at the time of joining the organization. Son of a Saint accepts young men who have lost a father due to death; long-term incarceration of 15 years or more, that can be verified; adoption by a single mother; or a young man whose father has been deported.
Due to limited resources, Son of a Saint is unable to accept all mentee applicants and selects new mentees according to a set of carefully constructed criteria that account for a mentee’s need for our services. Son of a Saint does not and shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), national origin (ancestry), disability, or socio-economic background, in any of its selection processes.
