Join the Recirculating Farms organization working at the nexus of local food production and food justice! The Veteran Farm Program Leader will expand and manage a developing program at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (VA) main campus in Mid City, New Orleans, including: plant, harvest and care for the production systems plan and potentially lead classes about farming on-site, based on Veterans interests, and elsewhere as needed, engage in demonstrations and advise participants on their garden beds; manage interns and work with volunteers; and speak to groups that frequent the site for educational days, classes or special events. Lead community outreach regarding in-kind donations and equipment specifically for the Veterans’ the farm program, and occasional use of social media to advertise classes or provide community updates.
The Program Leader will be the primary liaison between the team leaders in the various programs on site at the VA campus, some of which serve Veterans with mental or physical challenges and with the team at our organization. Hours will include some evenings and weekends as needed.
This position requires a strong, practical knowledge of agricultural skills, general management capabilities as well as agricultural management, and a passionate commitment to increasing knowledge and access of fresh local food to promote mental, physical and social health in the local Veteran population. We are specifically seeking someone with prior experience in teaching, working with Veterans, and inter-organizational coordination. The Program Leader has primary responsibility for the planning, coordination and implementation of activities with the VA.
