Second Harvest Food Bank
Whether the task is small or big; an act of volunteering is always special and important. It means that you need to act as a volunteer and help someone by adding your selfless extended support when you needed it most. Many people volunteer because of their personal choices and many people volunteer because of their profession and school preferences. It is something that people do for respect and remembrance in the society and when you volunteer for something it also indicates that you are aware about the rights of the society and aims towards making society better and better with each volunteering act. Second Harvest Food Bank realizes that volunteers play a vital role in our mission to feed South Louisiana. We know that without the help of our incredible volunteers, we could not fulfill that mission. Therefore, it is our pleasure to have you as a volunteer and we look forward to this continued partnership now and in the future.
Here are a few things you should know before you arrive:
Our facility is located at 700 Edwards Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70123
We are currently under construction. Please be cautious of moving cars, trucks in both front docks, and other equipment as you navigate around our facility with this new traffic pattern.
Repack volunteers will park on “G” street and enter the facility through the left side of the gate by the back dock. Volunteers will then walk the length of the building to the new entrance of the temporary repack area. A Volunteer Coordinator will greet Food Sorting volunteers upon arrival.
The work that you will be doing is in the warehouse packing food boxes or in our cooler sorting and categorizing donated food product. Upon your arrival your job description will be given to you in greater detail.
Volunteer jobs are based on our current needs in and around the warehouse, please come prepared to work in the warehouse or in the cooler (layers are recommended).
The warehouse is not climate controlled so please dress accordingly. Jeans, shorts and t-shirts are acceptable.
YOU MUST WEAR CLOSED TOE SHOES! Anyone wearing flip-flops, sandals, or Crocs will not be permitted to work the shift.
Cold water is available for all volunteers.
Groups must submit a SECOND HARVEST permission slip for each youth volunteer under the age of 18. If groups do not submit a SECOND HARVEST permission slip prior to the start of the shift, they will not be able to participate in the activity.
Second Harvest requires 1 chaperone per 5 youth between the ages of 9-13 and 1 chaperone per 10 youth between the ages of 14-18.
Second Harvest is not responsible for lost or stolen personal items – please lock valuables in your car.
Please arrive on time. Anyone arriving more than 15 minutes late may not be permitted to volunteer for the shift. Remember to sign in and sign out and make a name badge.
If you need a letter or record for service hours please notify the Volunteer Coordinator upon your arrival.
If for some reason you need to cancel your shift or your group is coming with less or more than expected, please contact Amber Cangelosi as soon as possible at (504)729-2849.
