Overcoming Racism is an organization that aims to address the root cause of educational inequity: systemic racism. Overcoming Racism provides high quality equity and anti-racism training in order to equip schools and organizations with the necessary tools to dismantle oppression within their institutions and improve the collective cultural competence among team members. Overcoming Racism is one of our Love Your City clients, and they also provide leadership coaching, consulting, and community events. With this, the team of Overcoming Racism aims to help clients understand how systems of oppression operate in order to cultivate equity and anti-racism in the workplace and continue to demand for effective change.
Matthew Kincaid, the founder, CEO, and Chief Consulting Officer of Overcoming Racism, has experience in education and leading anti-racism training workshops for more than fourteen years. Kincaid used to work as a teacher and eventually became an assistant principal in a New Orleans public school, where he noticed the systemic barriers that prevented children from receiving a high quality education. After receiving support from a mentor through a local startup called Propeller, Kincaid used New Orleans’s small business arena to achieve his mission of creating classrooms with educators and students that are more culturally responsive. With this, he wanted to educate students about race, tolerance, and cultural awareness. Overcoming Racism believes that one’s own community is critical in a child’s education and should play a role in so, even if the New Orleans education system is being increasingly led more by more charter schools.
Overcoming Racism has received a high amount of success in recent years. In 2018, Matthew Kincaid was named the Louisiana Entrepreneur of the Year. The organization has expanded to more schools and organizations and has hired more educators and consultants to make their vision a reality. They have also expanded outside of New Orleans and have offered services to the NBA, the New York City Department of Education, Turnaround Arts for the Kennedy Center, and many more. They are also a client of LifeCity.
Love Your City is beyond proud of the amazing work and support of Overcoming Racism. They are offering an anti-racism workshop that is open to the public on September 16 and September 17, 2021 with a fee. You can sign up by going to our calendar event!
