Pollution Prevention: 6 At-Work Tips

Various large sectors - namely energy, manufacturing, and commercial - contribute to pollution at immense rates in comparison to residential sources. Therefore it is imperative that we take a look at how businesses can lower their pollution as a point source and encourage those around them to follow. The US EPA frames it in a good way - the more waste a business produces, the more it costs them. By consuming and throwing away less, there is reduced need to handle, treat, and dispose of waste. Waste prevention tips include:

  • Purchasing durable, long-lasting materials

  • Striving to eliminate raw materials that are not incorporated into your final product or service

  • Using products that are free of toxic materials

  • Reducing the amount of packaging

  • Conserving water and/or energy

  • Implementing in-process recycling

Additionally, consider taking on an EMS: Environmental Management System. This  is a set of processes/practices that allow an organization to reduce its environmental impacts and increase its operating efficiency. Resources for EMS: https://www.epa.gov/ems
