This is an exciting opportunity to join a nonprofit organization working at the nexus of local food production and food justice. Working in close collaboration with our Education Coordinator and Farm Coordinator, and reporting to and coordinating with the Executive Director, the Veteran Farm Program Leader will develop and manage an emerging program at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (VA) main campus in Mid-City, New Orleans, including: plant, harvest, and care for the production systems; plan and potentially lead classes about farming on-site, based on Veterans' interests, and elsewhere as needed; engage in demonstrations and advise participants on their garden beds; manage interns and work with volunteers; and speak to groups that frequent the site for educational days, classes, or special events. Lead community outreach regarding in-kind donations and equipment specifically for the Veterans’ farm program, and occasional use of social media to advertise classes or provide community updates.
The Program Leader will be the primary liaison with team leaders in the various programs on-site at the VA campus, some of which serve Veterans with mental or physical challenges. Hours will include some evenings and weekends as needed. This position requires a strong, practical knowledge of agricultural skills, general management capabilities as well as agricultural management, and a passionate commitment to increasing knowledge and access of fresh local food to promote mental, physical, and social health in the local Veteran population. We are specifically seeking someone with prior experience in teaching, working with Veterans, and inter-organizational coordination. The Program Leader has primary responsibility for the planning, coordination, and implementation of activities with the VA.
