About Gulf South for Green New Deal: GS4GND is a multi-year, multi-state initiative and regional formation of organizations, networks, small businesses and engaged residents of the Gulf South (TX, LA, MS, AL, FL) to address the climate crisis and its impacts in the region through the advancement of equity and justice along with the creation of millions of living wage, ecologically sustainable jobs. GS4GND connects long-existing work in the South towards climate, racial, and economic justice. This regional formation develops policy, advances civic engagement through regional campaigns and organizes communities in the creation of a uniquely Gulf South version of a Green New Deal, centering the realities, power and relevance of the region. GS4GND will build regional power to advance a uniquely southern, collective, frontline vision for a sustainable future that center laborers, farmers, fisherfolk, tribal nations and frontline communities in a just transition away from extractive economies that accelerate the global climate crisis.

About the Position- Regional Organizer: The Gulf Coast Center for Law and Policy is seeking applicants for a regional organizer position to help support the strategic vision and implementation of the Gulf South for Green New Deal movement across the five Gulf South states. Candidates who are committed to climate justice, frontline leadership, and building a movement for a more just and sustainable economy are encouraged to apply. The Gulf South for a Green New Deal is a regional movement infrastructure built through regional convergences, strategic convenings, and innovative spaces for collective healing and reconciliation. The Gulf South for a Green New Deal is advancing a policy platform across Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas rooted in community leadership and vision and build over a six month participatory process from the ground-up. The regional organizer will help move this platform forward into implementation while supporting the long-term vision of a self-sustained movement infrastructure that is governed by and accountable to community leadership.

The role is expected over two years, with the goal of creating a self-sustaining movement of work. The role of Regional Organizer is not a decision-making leadership role for the Gulf South for Green New Deal, but rather a facilitative leadership role supportive of collective decisions.

Expectations and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate information, communication, relationships, and processes to advance Gulf South for a Green New Deal Initiative;

  • Manage organizational and frontline relationships;

  • Set agendas and facilitate meetings and strategy sessions;

  • Build capacity and train leaders in facilitation processes;

  • Support the development and implementation of political education and curriculum;

  • Support on communications and narrative strategies;

  • Help co-create the infrastructure for a self-sustained and self-determined Gulf South for a Green New Deal; and

  • Mediate and work to resolve conflicts at the community level.

Ideal Candidates will possess:

  • 7 - 10 years experience in grassroots organizing around climate justice, racial justice, and/or economic justice;

  • 5 years experience in coalition building, alignment, and community network development;

  • Knowledge and experience using calendaring software, email, social media, and other digital tools for coordination and communication;

  • Knowledge of database management, surveying, and data analysis;

  • Demonstrates ability of coordination skills across multiple perspectives, geographies

  • Demonstrates ability to co-create inclusive and participatory processes of agenda setting, meeting facilitation, and strategy development;

  • Demonstrates ability to think strategically as well as understand local nuances;

  • Demonstrates ability to create short to long-term work planning process;

  • Demonstrates ability to work as part of a grassroots team;

  • Demonstrates ability to foster and cultivate memberships;

  • A deep commitment to supporting, amplifying, and following frontline leadership;

  • A deep commitment to fostering self-determined and governed work; and,

  • A deep understanding, knowledge, and experience in working in the Gulf South.
